Mikhail Glinka: Trio Pathétique in D Minor (1832)

A rare and heartfelt trio for clarinet, bassoon, and piano—Glinka’s early Romantic voice, performed with lyrical warmth and emotional depth.

Piece Overview

Composed in 1832 while Glinka was in Italy, Trio Pathétique in D minor is a relatively rare chamber work for clarinet, bassoon, and piano. Despite being an early piece, it already displays Glinka’s expressive depth—he inscribed in the score, “The only way I know love is by the pain it causes,” suggesting personal emotional resonance. The quartet unfolds in four movements:

  1. Allegro moderato – The clarinet and bassoon “serenade” each other over a rippling piano accompaniment.
  2. Scherzo: Vivacissimo – Playful yet concise.
  3. Largo – The emotional heart of the work, where the clarinet sings, the bassoon responds, and together they weave a lyric dialogue.
  4. Allegro con spirito – A passionate, storm-driven finale drawn together by references to earlier themes.

Performance Context

This video features Trio Pathétique as performed in the Marshall Room at Boston University. It was played during the DMA chamber recital of my pianist friend Sherry Ye and bassoonist Zijie Cai, bringing together chamber-playing precision, emotional warmth, and collaborative artistry.
